Our centenarians: active, innovative and ready for the  next century

What exciting times! Physiology had become a scientific discipline in its own right. Many game changing  findings shaped and changed the understanding  how the  body  works. It was so successful that Alfred Nobel dedicated one of  his prizes to “Physiology or Medicine”.

The  foundation of many  national physiological societies in which  physiologists organized themselves was a logical  consequence of the  rapid scientific  development. Some of them are now already over one hundred  years old, The Physiological Society founded in UK celebrates even its 150th anniversary in 2026.

Looking back over the past century, we can see that physiology has clearly contributed to the promotion of health in society. The most obvious marker of this is the extension of the healthy lifetime of humans.

Below find current a selection of societies of current or  recent centenarians

From 1876 to present day, TPS continued to advance physiology and change the world.

In 2026, the Society celebrates its 150th anniversary: a landmark moment to celebrate physiologists past and present, the discoveries that have shaped our understanding of the body, and the community driving physiology forward. Find out more  about its history and an overview over the many events to celebrate 150 years!

The “Deutsche Physiologische Gesellschaft” was founded in 1904 and  has currently about 800 active members. It is part of Europhysiology and was the national  host for IUPS2025 in Frankfurt

The Scandinavian Physiological Society (SPS) was founded in 1925 and has now supported physiological sciences in the Nordic countries for a century. Find more here

The 100th Anniversary Congress was  held  2023  in Kyoto At this memorial 100th meeting, the PSJ,  looked back over the 100-year history of physiology in Japan, and looked forward to the next 100 years in anticipation of further development., in particular how physiology can contribute to the sustainability of our world, both for humans and for the natural environment. The main  message was “homeostasis, which is the fundamental concept of physiological science, should be the most critical for the future sustainability of our human life, society and environment of the earth and universe”
